Harris (Bo) Butler Harris ‘Bo’ Butler was introduced to flying by his father in the mid-1960s in an Aeronca Champ. After graduating from the University of New Orleans with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Bo and his wife, Rita, moved to Seattle, WA where he went to work for The Boeing Aircraft Co. He learned to fly at Boeing Field in 1985. Daughter, Samantha, was born in 1986 and not long after the family moved to Savannah, GA where he worked for Gulfstream Aerospace. Harris, IV was born in 1988 and he and his sister spent many hours playing their Gameboys in the back seat of a G35 Bonanza. In 1996 the family moved again to the Salt Lake Valley and Bo purchased his first taildragger, a single seat open cockpit bi-wing and soon thereafter he also bought a Maule M4. He fell in love with mountain flying and the family spent many weekends in the backcountry of Idaho. They moved to Kansas in 1999 and bought a postage stamp-sized piece of property that is just long enough to operate a high performance taildragger from and still live there today. In 2000 they bought a Cessna 180, sold the Maule (because their daughter’s legs got too long for the Maule’s rear seat) and joined the 180/185 club. The 180 lost engine on departure in Sheridan, WY around 700 ft AGL and he now flies a C185 C model and takes grandson, Knox, and granddaughter, Kathryn flying frequently. Bo has fallen victim to the need for speed and his 185 has joined the Kansas Wheat Rocket club. His new motto is “If you fly fast, it’s not that far.”
