Looking for nice 185
Author Last Post
dlloyd,

Thank you for the advice. I agree that is the way but they are hard to find.  Many times the owner thinks it worth more than it actually is. I don't blame them, I felt the same way about my J3 I sold several months ago. I will keep looking.
I see a lot of Canadian 185's and looked at a couple but the import deal kinda gives me concern. A DAR has to give his stamp of approval or you cannot register it in the US. Very legitimate STC's approved for Canada may not be the same as the US version.

Tom,

. . .don't give up locating a good 180/185.  I have learned over the years that there are many sitting in hangars not being used.  I think the following is the problem. .

The owners loved their airplane, but, can't fly it anymore due to all kinds of problems: age, medicals, etc., etc.  But, they hang on to it.  Then, something serious happens in the family and suddenly it comes out of the hangar and goes up for sale.  I have seen this scenario many times and in fact, that is how I found my 185 back in '97.

Like you, I looked over the whole of USA and was disappointed at what I saw.  I came close to buying a 206 instead.  Great hauler, roomier and in the mid '90s they were cheap.

By some accident, I found my 185 on my own small airport closeted in a hangar.  The owner developed throat cancer and finally put up a small ad.  I was lucky; close by and made a quick deal as others were already closing in for a fast buy.  Brokers are really fast to find the best 180/185's.  I believe they have a method of getting Trade a Plane data before the general public.  So, you cannot tarry when you sense a good aircraft up for sale.
Good Luck,
PS: A 185 with an auto-pilot is a huge benefit in my view.  It relieves your work load when stuff starts to get "hairy".  S-tec makes good units for 180/185.  My S-tec 55 is rock solid in all 3 axis and I highly recommend it. .

I have flown from my home in New England to Northern/Southern Canada, Mi, Ca. and Ohio looking at different ones.
I think one thing to do is confirm all that is listed verbally before you venture out to see one. One listed as 400 SMOH was actually 400 since several jugs were replace with some 1300 actually SMOH. Another listed as 80 SMOH was actually majored by a non licensed mechanic with no log entry!

I have missed a couple of very nice ones, just a day or so late in inquiring.
Have learned a lot and am still searching.
Basically what I would like:

Mid to low time engine

TT below 7000/  LR fuel

Seaplane, Stol would like Sportsman, vortex generators would be nice.

Decent VFR radios, I am a Ipad mini/Foreflight guy

Would like an A/P but not a necessity.

Virus-free. www.avast.com

I gather you are not interested in my 185 anymore.

Joe
