wingtip lighting

A suggestion concerning the Wingtip Lighting installation. . . .
Part of the lighting system is installation of high power filament type lights; much like a landing light.
My suggestion deals with the orientation of the bulbs.  Line up the bulbs such that the filaments orientation are "vertical".
I don't know if my suggestion holds merit but, here is why I mentioned it.
My original lamps were installed with the filaments horizontal.  Some time later, I noted that both bulbs failed about the same time.  Detailed checking showed the filaments of both bulbs were broken.
My next bulb installation I used care to get them mounted with the filaments vertical.  These bulbs have lasted for years with no failure.
Much of my landings are on rough surfaces and I am convinced the wing vibration broke the filaments of the original set of bulbs.

Jim,

I contacted RMD today. They said the tips that come with the STOL kit are not used with their system. Their kit includes new wingtips. I'll contact you by email, if I may for installation info.

 Thanks, John

Hi John,
I have done many of these conversions, and would be happy to answer any questions that you have.  RMD is the company near Hillsboro, OR, that makes the HID wing-tip kit that I have installed.

Just had wings rebuilt on my 1956 180 as previously mentioned. Monarch aux tanks and Sportsman STOL kit added during rebuild. The supplied fiberglass wingtips are molded to receive position lights. I would like to add the pulse lights that have clear plastic lens in the forward corner of the wingtip as well as the strobe/position lights outboard. has anyone else done this or have any input for this change? Thanks, John.

John, I had Beegles in Greeley Colorado install the RMD wing tip lights back in 2009.  I love these lights and Beegles did an outstanding job.  You will really like them at night to help with landing if you only have the one set of lights on the wing.  Also, I go to Johnson Creek, Idaho and they really help with other people seeing me down the canyon.  I would like to know what you think about the aux fuel tanks you added.  I have been thinking about doing this but do not know anybody to reach out to, to ask questions.  Thank you for the response when you get time.
