There seems to be a similar feature already. I click "member log in" when I come on the site, and it shows me a red "New!" tag for every forum which has new unread posts. An "unread" button to bring up those threads would be handier but would essentially do the same thing.

Strongly agree.  This is a most basic feature that is glaringly missing from this forum format.

Most forums that I follow have a tab to hit that brings up all recent activity (usually 48 or 72 hours) across ALL forums. Its a great way to see whats hot, whats being discussed, etc. 

would be great to check in that way.....

Agree. A view/option with the "Last 24 hours", "Last 7 days" or even better....all unread posts since the last time that you checked-in. Then have the the ability to "mark all as read". That is my preferred way to check-in periodically and feel that I haven't missed anything.
 
Now...if we could just increase the traffic, this would be a really useful feature!
