Apparently the original cowl & airbox worked OK. FWIW the O-470 A J & K engines are all approved for the (prior to A model) Cessna 180 per the TCDS.
About 10 years ago, a guy I know replaced the J engine in his 55 model with an R. He no longer flies and the airplane (and paperwork) is long gone, but you could get the records CD from the FAA for N9335C and see what (if any) 337's were filed for the work.

R that allows used of the J engine mount, the 1955 cowlings, air box, etc.
